How Each Split Mode Works

⚖️ Equal Split

Divides the total evenly among all people. Best for rent with same-size rooms, utility bills, or any expense where everyone benefits equally.

% Custom %

Each person pays a percentage of the total. Ideal for unequal rooms (60/40 rent split), or when income-based splitting is preferred. Percentages must sum to 100%.

🔢 Exact Amount

Each person enters exactly what they owe. Perfect for restaurant bills where people ordered different items. The amounts must add up to the total.

🍕 By Shares

Assign each person a number of shares (1, 2, 1.5…). The total is split proportionally. Useful when one person is covering more (e.g., 2 shares vs 1 share = pays double). Half-shares allowed.

🧾 Tip Splitter

Enter the bill subtotal, choose a tip % (5–20% or custom), add optional tax/GST, and get the full total. Then split equally or by custom percentage. Great for restaurant groups.

How to Split Rent Fairly

For equal rooms, split the total rent equally. For different room sizes, use Custom % — bigger rooms pay a higher share. Common splits for 2 flatmates: 60/40 or 55/45 for unequal rooms.

For utilities (electricity, water, internet), an equal split is usually fairest unless usage differs significantly — e.g., if one person works from home.

Want to track all of this automatically every month? FairShare for Roommates lets you set up recurring bills that auto-log every month.

FAQ

How do I split rent fairly between roommates?
Use Equal Split for same-size rooms or Custom % for unequal rooms. Enter each person's name and the calculator shows their exact share.

How do I split a restaurant bill with tip?
Use Tip Splitter mode. Enter the subtotal, pick a tip %, add tax if needed, and split the final total equally or by custom %.

What is By Shares mode?
Assign each person a number of shares. If Alice has 2 and Bob has 1, Alice pays two-thirds. Fractional shares (like 1.5) are supported.
