How to Split a Restaurant Bill Fairly

When everyone ate roughly the same, splitting equally is quickest — enter the subtotal, add GST and any service charge or tip, and divide the grand total by the number of people. Nobody has to do mental math and it's over in seconds.

When orders were uneven — one person had a starter, main and dessert while another just had a coffee — an equal split isn't fair. Use By Items: enter what each person's food came to, and the calculator distributes GST, service charge, and tip proportionally to each order. Someone who ordered twice as much food pays twice the share of tax and tip too, which is the fair way to do it.

A quick note on Indian bills: service charge is voluntary. Per the Department of Consumer Affairs, restaurants can't force it onto your bill without consent, and you can ask for it to be removed. GST, however, is a genuine tax — usually 5% at standalone restaurants.

Rates are indicative and change with GST Council notifications. Always go by the rate printed on your actual bill.
