How to Split Rent Fairly
The fairest rent split depends on how similar the rooms are. If every roommate has a similar-size room and shares common areas equally, an equal split is the simplest and most accepted method. Divide the total rent by the number of people and everyone pays the same.
When rooms differ — one person has the master bedroom with an attached bathroom, another has a small room, someone sleeps in the hall — an equal split feels unfair fast. The most defensible approach is to split by room area. Measure each private room in square feet, and let the calculator assign rent in proportion. Shared spaces (kitchen, living room, balcony) are effectively divided evenly because they aren't counted against any one person.
If you'd rather not measure, By Room Size % lets you agree on percentages directly — for example 60/40 for a two-person flat where one room is clearly larger, or 40/35/25 for three unequal rooms. The percentages must add up to 100%.
Utilities — electricity, water, internet, gas, and the cook or maid — are usually split equally, because everyone benefits from them regardless of room size. This calculator adds shared utilities on top of each person's rent share so you get one clean monthly figure per person.
One-time costs like the security deposit and brokerage are typically split the same way as rent. Enable that section to see each roommate's up-front amount alongside their monthly total.

FAQ
How do I split rent fairly when rooms are different sizes?
Use By Area mode — enter each room's square footage and the calculator assigns rent proportionally, with shared spaces effectively split evenly.
What is a fair split for 2 roommates with unequal rooms?
60/40 or 55/45 is common, with the bigger or ensuite room paying more. Use By Area for an exact, defensible number instead of guessing.
Should utilities be split equally or by room size?
Equally — everyone uses electricity, water, and internet similarly. This calculator splits utilities equally on top of the rent share.
